The Fan Lamp reimagines the fading craft of fan making through a contemporary lens, transforming it into a striking source of illumination. Originally conceived in response to a competition brief by The Worshipful Company of Fan Makers – who awarded it their Innovative Design Prize in 2022 – the project aimed to find new applications for this endangered craft. By distorting the fan’s traditional form, the lamp gains both literal and metaphorical dimension, while the integration of LED lights between the sticks elongates its shape and enhances its function. Through the interplay of light and shadow, it reveals the geometric beauty behind the fan’s spin, merging heritage techniques with modern utility. This innovative approach opens a new chapter for fan making, allowing it to expand into product design and connect with new audiences.
